“DRAGHI URGES EUROZONE TO FOCUS ON GROWTH” (May 4, 2012)

Thus the title of an article in the Financial Times today. This comes from yesterday’s meeting of the European Central Bank in Barcelona, where the bank president, Mario Draghi, called for a ten-year growth compact for Europe. Which immediately reminds me of Jacques Attali, the greatest optimist on the planet. He has been tirelessly advising growth to Nicolas Sarkozy, who has long been trying to come up with a European growth compact together with Angela Merkel. In short, Attali’s optimism is catching. By now it has reached all the way to Draghi. Go Attali, go! Forget about the stubborn facts. Forget about the dwindling probabilities of ever changing these facts. Boundless optimism is the only answer to Europe’s towering troubles. And there can be no greater optimism than believing that the subcontinent can grow again. Congratulations all around!
