VALE (May 1, 2011)
After a long pause in our friendship, yesterday I sent an electronic-mail message to Zvonimir Milanović, known to all as Zvonko or Zvone, who lives in Divjaki within sight of Motovun. He is one of the foremost Latin scholars in Croatia and he teaches the language at the University of Pula. “I need your help,” I started my message rather abruptly. “As a complement to ‘in principio erat verbum,’ what sounds better: ‘et in finem erit verbum’ or ‘etiam in finem erit verbum’.” This morning I found his learned answer. “Hm,” he started, “both are fine, but it is a question of context and style.” And then he offered yet another proposal: “Et verbum finem significabit.” He added gently: “Mea propositio.” I was delighted, of course. But his closing word really grabbed me: “Vale.” The straightforward meaning of this word is “farewell,” but it can also be read as “be worthy.” Oh, I love Latin!
