TURNING DARK (November 7, 2011)
My barber was in a good mood this morning. Soon after I sat down, he started telling me a story about another regular customer of his. “He’s about seventy,” he started. “He was here a few days ago, and he immediately asked me whether I had noticed that his hair was turning dark on the top of his head.” I was curious at once. “I didn’t notice it, “ the barber giggled, “but I went along with his story, and I admitted that there was some change in the darkness of his hair.” I was getting ever more curious. “And then he told me that he just got married to a woman twenty years his junior!” Now we both laughed. “He was on his honeymoon still,” the barber could not stop giggling. “If you notice that my hair is turning dark on top of my head,” I concluded, “you will know my secret already.” As everyone knows, barbers are not only about cutting hair and shaving. They promote marriage, too. And especially between older men and appreciably younger women.
