According to Croatian media, the United Nations’ International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague is soon to deliver its final verdict on war crimes that took place in the Nineties. True or false, the leaked total number of years to be spent in prison by war criminals from different sides is interesting enough. Collectively, the Serbs will get about seven-hundred years, the Croats one-hundred and seventy, and Bosnians (read: Muslims) forty years. If the punishment for Bosnians is set equal to one, then that for Croats is four, and the punishment for Serbs is eighteen. Of course, all sides are up in arms about the final verdict, but it is meaningful to ask whether or not these proportions make any sense. History will judge, it goes without saying, but the numbers strike me as about right. I can only hope the judges in The Hague did not use these proportions when considering their decisions. That is, that they did not cater to the sentiments of ignorant people like myself. When it comes to justice, I am ever a sucker.
