THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO? (September 2, 2011)
Stockmarkets are tumbling again. No good news left or right. No good news anywhere in sight. As I am browsing through the online edition of the Financial Times, I am attracted by a video clip with an interesting subtitle: “Fall of the West?” The question is whether Asia can cope with the collapse of America and Europe. The caption under an image of a fellow in a dark suit is even more interesting: “Nomura’s Robert Subbaraman lays out the worst-case scenario.” He is the financial giant’s chief economist, no less. I click on the button to start the video, but it just spins and spins. I come back ten minutes later, but the same thing happens once again. And so on, for at least ten times over several hours. The newspaper’s server is evidently collapsing on account of the untoward interest in the video clip. The worst-case scenario, indeed.
