THE SKIING EVENT (January 4, 2011)

Against my will, I am watching a skiing event on the television screen of a Zagreb café. The sound has been turned off. Images flash by at a clip. Soon enough, I start getting annoyed by all the emblems of the sponsors that appear on the screen. There is the Croatian coat of arms, which places the event. To the best of my understanding, it is taking place at a hill close to the Croatian capital. There are logos of the television company and one of the leading mobile-phone companies in the country. And then there are emblems of producers of skiing equipment, clothing, cars… There are logos of several banks, as well. Many of them are not Croatian, either. It does not take me long to start getting really angry: “How long until we all engage in this horrible sport?” I can easily imagine every television screen crowded with logos, emblems, and coats of arms. But I surprise myself out of the blue. “What the heck,” it flashes through my mind, “I, too, can play this silly game!” A moment later, I imagine myself wearing the Bon coat of arms on my woolen cap, the Venetian lion on the back of my fleece, and the insignia of Harvard and MIT on my chest. For good measure, I add the World Wide Web address of my Residua under the Venetian lion and my electronic-mail address under the MIT insignia. There. Now I am ready for the skiing event!
