THE RIOTS (August 11, 2011)
People around the developed world are kind of stunned by the riots in London and across Britain. But how likely are such riots in a city closer to home? They are likely enough, and the likelihood is growing all the time. Just like they erupted in Paris a few years back, they can erupt any day now in Rome or Madrid or Berlin. Or Zagreb, for that matter. Among the unemployed, young men are hardest hit. Now that all sorts of social support are dwindling, young men are ever more destitute. And angry. Boiling with anger, in fact. All that is needed is a trigger, no matter how trivial, and they will quickly turn this way or that for a handy flag. An ideological explanation of their behavior, that is. The way Europe is shaping, they may turn against immigrants. Or Muslims. Or people whose skin has a slightly different color. But the underlying cause will remain the same: hopelessness in the face of plenty. For the time being, at least. Ensnared by unsustainable development, the developed world will be going inexorably down. And the riots will only speed up the decline.
