THE PLACE TO WRITE (December 9, 2011)
I have always had a place to write. Years ago, it was the writing desk in my study, where the portable typewriter sat. It was a nuisance to move, though. Even the portable computers I used to use for writing were too heavy to log around. They rarely shifted from the desk. Until recently, even the laptops were no fun to cart about. And so I always knew where I would sit when I got an urge to jot something down. Nothing much changed in this respect until I got my Mac Book Air. For the first time I can write anywhere I find myself. And I can immediately post whatever I have written on the World Wide Web. Thus I have lost the very notion of the place to write. It is wherever I happen to be, assuming I have my knapsack with me. This is where the new laptop can always be found. Lately, I rarely write while I am at home. The place to write is the world entire. An exaggeration, but still true.
