THE MELTDOWN (August 18, 2011)
The leading financial newspapers have described today’s situation in the world’s stockmarkets as a meltdown, but most other newspapers of renown have not even mentioned the impending catastrophe. Instead, they have focused on trivia of all kinds. It is as though the second dip of the Great Recession has long been accepted as unavoidable. So, why bother? But the meltdown is staggering, indeed. Chances are that stock prices will keep plummeting tomorrow, as well. Life must go on, though. And I am a bit confused about which way to look right now. Am I exaggerating the looming disaster? That is, am I missing some tasty tidbits among the towering pile of trivia? Or is the world around me going crazy? Can meltdowns as momentous as this one be skirted by a few easy tricks beyond my ken? One way or another, I look forward to tomorrow’s stockmarket news. As well as next week’s, I hasten to add. As if I am the one whose solemn job it is to turn off the stockmarket lights.
