THE MAYA HIEROGLYPHICS (August 4, 2011)

There are a few subjects that have exercised me for most of my life, and that of the Maya hieroglyphics is among them. I was fifteen or sixteen when I got hooked. Over the years, I have collected many a book on the subject. And I have concocted many a file with my own renderings of the glyphs, as well as the history of the Mayan people. The last time I was in Zagreb, I found a book about the reading of the glyphs. That was two weeks ago. It was published in 2001 and it looked kind of familiar. I was not sure whether or not I already had the book, but I still bought it after some hesitation. When I returned to Motovun, I found it among my books rather too quickly. As it turned out, I bought it in Reading only a year after its publication. Of course, I felt guilty at once. Not because I bought the same book twice, but because I had hardly read it even once. Since my arrival in Motovun, I have neglected one of my favorite subjects to the point of not recognizing a book of some importance for its study. As is my old habit, I turned the conundrum around in a jiffy. It is time to return to the Maya hieroglyphics. An added benefit is that the esoteric subject has nothing whatsoever to do with the world around me. Yuck!
