THE JAR (January 28, 2011)

Knowing that I would be away for the winter, I took a jar of my hot sauce with me the last time I left Motovun. Much of it stayed behind. As my stays in Zagreb are getting ever longer, I am missing the fabulous sauce ever more fervently. The jar is almost full a whole month later, though. I do dip into it nearly every day, but I take ever less from it each time I crack it open. Day by day, my sauce is getting to be a bit too hot for me. Alas! The less I eat of it, the hotter it gets, too. In short, I am facing a real dilemma: shall I dilute the sauce as I go along, so as to enjoy it a bit more thoroughly, or shall I eat of it more often, so as to build up my resilience once again? Only a year or so ago I could eat fire itself, or so it seemed to me. This is a serious question for me, and I am not sure which way I will ultimately go. But I will watch the jar with growing concern. If it stays nearly full for another month, I will have to make up my mind about the best way forward. And I dread that decision already.
