THE IDEA OF MARRIAGE (July 14, 2011)
An American woman in her mid-thirties is talking with an Australian couple about the same age. I am a couple of tables away from them on the hotel terrace, and I cannot but overhear what they are talking about. The subject is the reception of tourists by the local people in Dalmatia and Istria. Everyone is ecstatic about it. The American woman is talking about a recent experience with two old guys along the Croatian coast. They unexpectedly paid for the drinks she had with another American woman her age. “As it turned out,” she beams at her Australian friends, “both of them were married!” They beam back at her with understanding, but I am left wondering about the story. There is something wrong with these people’s idea of marriage.
