THE HALLMARK (March 23, 2011)
I will be heading for Motovun in a few hours, and this year’s statistics are flashing through my mind. This is the eighty-second day of the year, and that is precisely how many days I have spent in Zagreb so far. That is twenty-two percent of the year, too. I will be back in Zagreb in several days, but my spring and summer in Motovun will start a couple of weeks later. From mid-April till, say, mid-October I will be spending most of my time there. And how do I feel about it? My feelings are pretty mixed, of course. I will enjoy my solitude, as well as my next dip into yoga, but I will miss my beloved. And how. She will be coming to Motovun every few weeks, and I will be coming to Zagreb every now and then, but we will be separated much of the time. After the whole winter spent together in both places, it is hard to imagine our separation. The coming days will be its first and bitter test, of which we are both aware. But my return to Zagreb will be sheer joy. Having not yet departed, I am already celebrating our reunion. And this will be the hallmark of the entire year.
