THE FLIP SIDE (November 17, 2011)

Speaking in Australia, Barack Obama has reaffirmed his plea to be America’s first Pacific president. Asia-Pacific is a top priority for America, he declared once again. This is where the Twenty First century will take shape. And so forth. Now that American troops are about to leave Iraq and Afghanistan, a major move to Australia is expected. American bases in Asia-Pacific will bulge, but new ones are sure to appear all over the region. The way things look at present, Australia will harbor the flagship bases and related military installations. But it is interesting to consider the other side of the policy coin, for there is always the other side. Namely, George Bush was America’s last Atlantic president. Although Europe is not exactly a bottom priority for America at this juncture, it is moving that way slowly but surely. And so is the Middle East, which remains Europe’s headache. Curiously, the current analysis of Obama’s prophetic visit to Australia does not even mention the flip side of the emerging American policy. Perhaps it is all too obvious to mention.
