STARTING TO WORRY (April 16, 2011)

As of late, I am spending a lot of my time dealing with administration. Bureaucracy, that is. The last few months I have been dealing with my remaining two pensions, one from Britain and another from Slovenia. Besides, I have been dealing with my accounts in several banks in the States and Britain. Far from both countries, I have ever more trouble keeping things in good order. Many letters, electronic-mail messages, and phone calls later, I feel ever more powerless. Slowly but surely, the bureaucracy is winning. No matter how well organized I happen to be, there is always something that is amiss. Always something that needs fixing. Or explaining. And so I am starting to worry. Although I am managing everything rather well for the time being, how will it be ten or twenty years from now? Will I be able to manage my own administrative affairs? That is, how much longer will I be able to manage them all by myself? If bureaucracy is such a nuisance right now, when I am only a day short of sixty-five, how much more of a nuisance will it be in the future?
