SOLSTICES AND EQUINOXES (December 21, 2011)
The two solstices and the two equinoxes used to have fixed dates in my mind: March 21, June 21, September 21, and December 21. But these are only rule-of-thumb dates. The solar system is kind of wobbly. For instance, this year the winter solstice falls on December 22 rather than 21. Nowadays, the exact dates can easily be found on the World Wide Web, and my friends occasionally remind me of my mistakes with the dates. Which only dampens my enthusiasm about solstices and equinoxes, the only true holidays on this planet that I have embraced in growing desperation with holidays on offer. Come to think of it, though, who needs holidays? Either every day is a holiday, or none can ever be.
