According to Google Analytics, about forty percent of visits to my Residua website currently come directly, five percent from referring sites, and the remainder of some fifty-five percent through search engines. Only a year ago or so, if my memory can be trusted, some fifty percent of visits came directly, thirty percent from referring sites, and the remainder of about twenty percent through search engines. Now, I understand the drop of the referring-sites visits, as I am no longer on Facebook. The rest is a bit of a puzzle. But the increasing rôle of search engines strikes me as a good thing. Although I know that an overwhelming portion of the searches are of the “wrong” kind, such as spying or pornography, the probability that my writings will be discovered by the “right” sort of visitor is nonetheless growing with the help of search engines. And I need only a few such visitors, anyway. Say, a dozen among the living. In the long run, search engines are working for me. And in earnest.
