SCREW AMERICA (April 2, 2011)

The weather has turned so balmy that all the outdoor cafés in central Zagreb are crammed all day round. For a while, only those with tables exposed to the sun were going strong, but the air is much warmer now. It is pleasant even in the shade. In a few weeks, shades of all sorts will be required, too. Anyhow, it is amazing to see so many people in a few streets and squares. “I just adore this,” I mumbled to my beloved as we were ploughing our way through the crowd. “Screw America,” she chuckled. “Work, work, work,” she explained with a twinkle in her eye when I gave her a puzzled look. “Indeed,” I mumbled back, “screw America.” About two-thirds of the way toward the pinnacle of economic development, Croatia is in the right place to enjoy life. Although many of the people around us do not have much to boast about, at least they know how to enjoy themselves with a cup of coffee or a glass of beer. Most Americans would have hard time even imagining the bliss, let alone taking an active part in it.
