PURGER (March 27, 2011)
After a long winter away from Motovun, I already have a new nickname in town: purger. Burger or a city-dweller in German, that is. Paor in the vernacular, or bauer in German, is the opposite of purger. A humble peasant, of course. And that is everyone who is not from Zagreb, the Croatian capital. The center of the world. Nay, the center of the entire universe and beyond. Although my new nickname has a strong negative connotation, it is still a title to dream of for the rest of the country. In my case, I was even born in Zagreb, which only adds to my growing glory. One way or another, my future in Motovun is now set. I am not from here, and I will never be. But I am from somewhere well recognized. Somewhere coveted, too. Zagreb, of all places. And this is how everyone in Motovun will expect me to behave from now on. Remote. Conceited. Patronizing to boot. I now have my rĂ´le cut out for me. The funniest bit is that this is exactly how I will actually behave from now on. And with quite some relish.
