PIGEON COURTSHIP (March 22, 2011)

At first sight, there is something ridiculous about pigeon courtship. Witness the spinning and cooing males offering their attentions now to one, now to another female, most of them scuttling away without delay. Or an occasional if breathless coupling on the wing. But pigeon courtship is also disarming in its honesty, at least by human standards. Besides, chances are it is not entirely in vain. For pigeons may well adjust to many a calamity coming our way. As well as many an unexpected opportunity, of course. Witness their numbers right in the middle of bustling cities. If all else fails, it is not hard to imagine them finding fresh pastures back in the teeming woods from which they hail. All things considered, pigeon courtship is not as ridiculous as it may appear on the pavement of a city square. Rather, it may even be a thing of concealed desire. Nay, outright envy. At least by human standards, once again.
