PEARL OF CONSCIOUSNESS (February 23, 2011)
Some associate my writing with a narrative style known as the stream of consciousness. I beg to differ. If styles are needed, it is the pearl of consciousness.
Addendum I (February 24, 2011)
Prey, what is a pearl? Nearly all shelled mollusks produce a pearl of some kind when irritating microscopic objects get trapped within their mantle folds. Concentric in structure, pearls are formed by natural processes of accretion. A great majority of them are not valued as gemstones because they are not of the desired shape or size. But even the most valued among them are nothing but irritants to the mollusks in question. Whence my narrative style, as well.
Addendum II (October 5, 2016)
The first addendum concerning my narrative style is very much to my liking. Indeed, every thought that comes to my mind is not unlike an irritant that needs coping with. And it often takes quite a few attempts to lay it to rest at last. This haiku with its two addenda so far is a good example of this laborious process. And laborious it often is, as witnessed by the number of addenda that grace many of my pieces of writing. On occasion, it takes several decades to lay a stray thought to rest. And it is anyone’s guess how many more addenda will eventually accrue to this particular pearl of consciousness. To be sure, I would be pretty lucky if only two of them would be enough to cope with this particular irritant.
Addendum III (February 25, 2017)
At least one more addendum is needed here, I reckon. Even more, it is an essential extension of the original haiku. Namely, my writings are about everything under the sun, as I like to put it. There is thus little if any connection between writings from the same period, let alone the same day. One is about cave art, another is about climate change, and yet another is about yoga, for instance. The only way to make sense of them, as it were, is to make selections on particular topics. So far, I have come up with a good number of such selections. Not surprisingly, one of them is about cave art, another is about climate change, and yet another is about yoga. But pearls of consciousness make up all such selections to date. The more glittery, the more appropriate they are for my purposes. In other words, I never follow any particular subject from start to finish. Perish the thought. That would constrain my thoughts in ways I find entirely unacceptable. Nay, repellent. Instead, I let my mind wander as it pleases, and I look for patterns only when I realize that yet another selection is warranted on account of so many allied gems in my wake. This way, I make sure that my writings are made up of pearls of consciousness and nothing but pearls of consciousness. Enough said, though. The glitter is almost annoying already…
