OUR FOREIGNERS (August 12, 2011)
I just had an interesting experience. Sitting at Miško’s, I talked with a couple who own a house in Motovun, but whom locals would consider pretty foreign. They live in Holland. He is relatively new, but she was a little girl when she first came to the hilltown with her parents. Anyhow, we talked about all sorts of things, some of which were rather heady by local standards, but we agreed on every single thing. And no kidding. “Hey,” I interrupted our lively banter at some point with a happy grin, “something’s weird here!” They looked at me with question marks on their faces. “We agree on everything that comes up in conversation!” I explained as I spread my arms wide to stress my point. Understanding me perfectly well, as well as the moribund local scene, they both laughed. The peak of the tourist season is a good time even for me, for many of our foreigners are present, even if briefly. God bless them for their foreign ways.
