ON THE BALL (June 8, 2011)

A street-entertainment festival of some kind is taking place in Zagreb. There are jugglers, musicians, acrobats, and magicians everywhere. Today I saw one Englishman and three Americans perform in two different squares in the center of the city. Each performance attracted several hundred people, all of whom seemed to be very enthusiastic. Now, both the Englishman and the Americans talked a good deal. The English they used did not strike me as adjusted to the supposed proficiency of Croatian audiences; rather, it sounded perfectly natural. It was straight English, as it were. Most important, it called for quick responses from the audiences—mostly laughter, but occasionally much more than that. And the audiences did better than I would have expected. In both cases, they apparently missed not a word. They were on the ball all the way through. So much so that I felt almost proud of them. Which only added to my wonder.
