ON SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SELF-DECEPTION (December 6, 2011)

My self-confidence is legendary among my friends and acquaintances around the world. Not a few have been dismayed by it, too. To them, my self-confidence smacks of self-deception, no less. I am thus not surprised to read that evolutionary biologists have come up with the notion that self-deception or self-delusion is essential in any sort of deception, which is central to human development. Those capable of it are better at deception in general, and deception is crucial in the Machiavellian game of life. People like me are deemed better at deception because they do not perceive it as such. They are deluded into believing it is the truth. Thus their success in overall competition for mates and all the resources needed for survival. To tell the truth, all this is perfectly fine with me. If this is at all possible, it only increases my bloated self-confidence.
