OFFICE HELPERS (June 14, 2011)
My beloved’s apartment in Zagreb is right across the street from some sort of school. It is run by the Catholic church, as witnessed by many nuns and occasional friars who come in and out of it. To the best of my knowledge, the school trains administrative assistants or office helpers of all descriptions. Most of the pupils are girls in their teens, but there are also a few boys the same age. Many of them appear to come from the provinces. During cold months, the apartment windows are closed and the school is far away, as it were. But it is very close during warm months, when windows must be kept open, at least ajar. Every so often, there are loud yelps and shrieks coming out of it. It seems that entire classes are participating in these voice exercises. They are so loud that they are disconcerting. When the pupils spill out into the street, which they do a few times a day, they sound like crazed turkeys. I have no idea what is going on in the school across the street, and I do not care to learn more about it, but I shudder at the thought that its pupils will soon enter private and public offices across Croatia. God help us all with office helpers such as these.
