NOT ENTIRELY FOR THE BIRDS (October 20, 2011)

I love birds. There are many of them in my garden and the woods beyond. Large and small, they are a joy to observe from my terrace. I have been thinking for a while about a little something I can do for them in turn. And so I asked Jozo Brandić to build me a birdhouse for the garden. At least it would provide a little bit of shelter during the coldest months. This morning he brought it to me. For longevity, he made it of steel. As I write, he is digging a hole for the base of the birdhouse, which will be rather high off the ground to make sure that cats and snakes do not disturb the birds. It will take a while for them to get used to the new contraption, but I am sure they will start using it sooner or later. In addition, this is a simple way to help Jozo with a little bit of money at the time when there is hardly anything for him to do. Building has all but stopped in Motovun and the surrounding country.
