MY RESIDUAL NATIONALITY (May 29, 2011)
Most of my life I was a Yugoslav. That is how I declared myself whenever I was asked about my nationality. A couple of months ago I declared myself a Croatian, though. And to a person collecting data for the Croatian census, no less. Although I paused a bit before answering, for I was rather confused about the question, I had nothing else to offer when it came up. Yugoslavia is no more. Declaring myself a European would be rather meaningless, too. Europe is still, but only just. I could say that I was a Venetian, but Venice is no more, either. Besides, this could be easily misinterpreted as declaring myself an Italian, which would not be to my liking at all. I even thought of saying that I was a Martian, but reason prevailed. “Imagine,” I still tell my friends whenever I remember the census interview, “I declared myself a fucking Croatian!” My residual nationality, it goes without saying.
