My beloved wondered how long chimpanzees lived. Thirty to forty years, I guessed. When I googled the chimpanzee life span, it turned out I was pretty close. They live thirty-five to forty years in the wild and sixty in captivity. I also learned that most animals live longer in captivity than in the wild. This hardly surprised me, but the difference in the case of the chimpanzees still stunned me. Twenty to twenty-five years! “The same holds for humans,” I quipped. “They, too, live much longer in captivity.” What better way to think about civilization?
