HUMAN ERROR (August 15, 2011)

There are few expressions that annoy me as much as that of so-called human error. Whose error? In standard usage, it has to do with the operator or user of a machine or system. Say, a car or a highway. The machine or system are usually considered beyond reproach, but the errant operator or user lack knowledge, experience, or due attention. As well as much more besides. But who designed the machine or system? The expression is annoying for another and deeper reason, though. Forget about cars and highways. They are designed for idiots by idiots. However, who designed both the operator or user and the designer of the machine or system? Leaving religious crap aside, it should be nature’s error, instead. But nature and its blind bungling are typically left aside when human error is concerned. It is as though the operator or user of a machine or system can be guilty of every single fault that has managed to survive the mindless march of time. The expression sucks, as does nature itself.
