HOW TO TELL THEM (October 3, 2011)

Early this afternoon I bumped into one of our neighbors right in front of our apartment building. As there is no way to park in front of the building, she was waiting for her husband to pick her up. There was a pile of baggage in the doorway. They have a house close to the Slovene border, where they are going to spend a few days. Predictably, we started gabbing about the weather. Then we turned to how unseasonable it had gotten. And then she told me that she just learned from their country-house neighbors that all sorts of plants had started flowering already. She went through many of them by name. There was pain on her face. And on mine. The flowers, and maybe even some early fruits, will be smothered soon enough. The poor plants have not yet heard of climate change. What is even worse, there is no-one who knows how to tell them.
