FORGET CROATIA! (December 27, 2011)
I have been panicking lately. As the end of the year is nearing, I am expecting an order from the court in Pazin regarding the dodgy insult case lodged against me by the mayor of Motovun. Notwithstanding all its faults, that decision was upheld by the court in Pula, and it was my understanding that I had to pay the fine for insult regardless of the fact that I had already lodged a complaint against the decision with the highest court in Croatia. Having prepared the money, I kept waiting. As nothing was coming my way, a month or so ago I started writing to my lawyer. And then I started leaving phone messages with him. After a long period of bewildering silence, he just called me. All of a sudden, there is nothing I have to do at the moment. The court order regarding the fine will come my way only if the highest court in Zagreb also decides against me. Amazingly, this he tells me only now, six months after the decision of the court in Pula. As I have already argued about the legal process in Croatia, it is past compare (“Weirder than Hell,” July 14, 2011). I would thus like to repeat my warning to all those who are considering Croatia as a place to live. Forget Croatia! For a much better deal, consider Zimbabwe. When it comes to the legal system, Sierra Leone compares quite favorably, as well.
