ERROR (September 20, 2011)
As I am reading a book at home, I feel my mobile phone vibrating in my pocket. Before I manage to pull it out, I realize it is a call rather than a message, for the vibrations are continuous. Messages are announced by two vibration spurts only. “Renata Vrtarić,” I read on the screen. “Tell me,” I say to my neighbor with a smile on my face. “I don’t need you,” she says point blank. “Error,” she explains after a brief pause. After another brief pause, she adds one more word in the same flat tone of voice: “Sorry.” And then she hangs up before I manage to say a single word in return. I keep staring at the blank screen for a while before I turn the phone off and shove it back into my pocket. I shake my head and return to my book.
