CLIMATE CHANGE, MIND CHANGE (August 27, 2011)

When I bought my house in Motovun, I was dead against air-conditioning, which was earnestly suggested by the builder who refurbished the house. That was nine years ago, but the weather was quite different back then. Even in the middle of the summer one needed an additional piece of clothing in the evening. About two or three years later things started changing. Summers have been getting hotter and hotter ever since. And I already regret my decision regarding air-conditioning. It is too late for any adjustments, though. The refurbishment long completed, a new unit would be visible in a town that is supposed to be free from such embellishments of contemporary technology. Many air-conditioning units can be seen around town, but I would surely be pursued by the authorities for such abuses of the law. The only air-conditioning unit I can get at this stage is a portable one that needs but a chimney for exhaust. And I am likely to have one or two for the next summer. But the funny thing is that one of the reasons for my last escape to Zagreb is that my beloved has an air-conditioning unit in her apartment. The heat is unbearable, and it would be impossible to survive in the Croatian capital without it. Sadly, it took me only nine years of climate change to change my mind, as well. Mind change comes ever more swiftly nowadays. The environment be damned.
