BROTHERS IN PESSIMISM (April 28, 2011)

Motovun is a small town, if it is still a town at all, but it attracts quite a number of funny people. In the best sense of the word “funny,” it goes without saying. This afternoon I had a long talk about the world economy with one of them. Brothers in pessimism, we quickly agreed that everything around us is on its hind legs. The next global crisis is just behind the corner. It is a question of days, weeks, months, or maybe even years, but we are facing an abyss. The capitalist system will crumble around its financial core, which is out of control already. And my brother is right at the core’s center. What amazes me about our talk is that neither of us paid any attention to our own affairs. The most practical things in life were nothing but an abstraction. Which only goes to show how funny are some of the people that Motovun attracts in its dotage. As funny as they come.
