BETWEEN THE FILM FESTIVAL AND ROOF REPAIR (July 25, 2011)
The main reason my beloved and I are in Zagreb at this time is that we have done our best to avoid the Motovun film festival. It is a noisy mess. And it started today, the first day of the week. As well as the first day of my beloved’s vacations. It was our plan to return to the hilltown as soon as the festival was over at the end of the week. But today we learned that the repair of the roof just above her apartment in Zagreb was supposed to start on this very day, as well. This morning we were awoken by construction workers putting up the scaffolding needed for this purpose. The noise was incredible, and especially the whine of the drill for anchors of the scaffolding. No less than three of them went into the wall of our bedroom. The roof repair is delayed for the time being because of the rain, which may continue for a few days, but the festival crowds are held in check by the same or similar weather, as well. Stuck both in Zagreb and Motovun, we are wondering what to do. Shall we go someplace in between? If so, where? For how long? And what the weather will be like anyplace we go? An existential crisis, in short. Between the film festival and roof repair—the old rock and a hard place of our very own.
