It is quite late in the evening when Ljubica Handjal joins a bunch of us at Miško’s. “Hey,” I start soon after she sits down at our table, “tell us something in English.” She laughs: “All I know in English I have learned years ago, while I was working in the hotel toilet!” Everyone turns toward her. “Excellent,” I prod her on, “let’s hear it.” She does not miss a beat: “I’m sorry.” We all start laughing. “I’ll come back,” she continues. “Next time,” she concludes her English expressions with a small bow. Of course, they all came from people who had not a coin to leave her for her services. “Mind you,” she raises her index finger while she keeps laughing, “I used to get more from a busload of Germans than from five busloads of Britons!” At this point some of us start thinking a bit more seriously about Ljubica’s assorted English expressions.
