A TOUCH OF SENILITY (September 15, 2011)

Arnold Trampe brought up Machiavelli as we gabbed at Miško’s early this afternoon. But he could not remember the thinker’s name. Neither could I. Both of us knew everything there was not know about him, except his name. As soon as we switched to another subject, Arnold came up with it, though. Machiavelli, Machiavelli! I mentioned that I had written quite a bit about him, but that his name had not crossed my mind for at least five years. As soon as I returned home, I checked my Residua for all the references to Machiavelli. I found five pieces written in 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, and 2002. The one from 1976, which boasts of a couple of addenda from 1977 and 1980, is the most substantial one, whereas the one from 2002 us barely worth mentioning. It has to do with Machiavellian behavior among politicians, instead. In a nutshell, I have let the great thinker slip out of my mind since the early Eighties. A touch of senility notwithstanding, I felt relieved by my discovery. Bless my magnum opus, always at my disposal.
