A HOPELESS TASK (June 2, 2011)
Today is a special day, and all my friends and acquaintances in Motovun are teasing me from the early morning. They see me dashing about. Now I am carrying loads of things from the store. “Ah,” they giggle, “we’re expecting visitors.” A moment later they see me walking home at a clip. “Cleaning time,” they laugh. My beloved is coming, indeed. And I am a different man for all to see. I just wave my hands at all the teasing and smile happily at everyone. My beloved is coming! Today is a special day, no doubt, and there are so many things to do. Toilets need scrubbing. The bathtub needs special attention, too. Kitchen, bathroom, and toilet floors need sweeping and wiping. And I am all eyes for the details that I am likely to miss, which she will spot even without looking. A hopeless task, of course, but a joy nonetheless. My beloved is coming, my beloved is coming!
