The last time I visited the States, I went to Cincinnati, Ohio, where a big international conference took place. It was September 2002, exactly a year after Twin Towers. One of the strongest memories of the trip are American flags attached to the windows of many a car. The contraption holding the flag was new to me. But I see it all around Zagreb on this visit. Or is it return? There are two sorts of flags attached to the windows: one is the red-and-white checkerboard from the Croatian coat of arms, and the other is the Croatian flag itself. Many cars sport them. Quite a number of them have two flags attached to their windows, too. And so I remembered Cincinnati, Ohio, as soon as I walked out of the central bus station yesterday afternoon. Only one car had such a flag in Motovun several days ago, and it was the red-and-white checkerboard. Luckily, the proud display of the flag this time around is only about the world soccer tournament in Brazil, where the Croatian team proudly wears the checkerboard. As of late, the young men are on everyone’s mind in Zagreb, Ohio.
