WOMAN, CAPITALISM (January 23, 2014)

Walking through central Zagreb this morning, I marveled at many a woman walking past me with palpable pride in her step. Most of them were on their way to work, too. The self-confidence and self-importance was often unmatched by appearance, but it was still mesmerizing. Not a single man I walked past had a matching step. Women are on the rise, no doubt. What helps them along is the ignorance of their advantage over men, though. As soon as I was back in my beloved’s apartment, I searched my writings with two words in tandem: “woman” and “capitalism.” Several pieces popped up on the screen, but two of them written about a month apart a couple of years ago were exactly to the point (“The End of Men,” September 16, 2012; and “Arbeit macht Frau,” October 23, 2012). Obedient, hardworking, agreeable, rule bound, submissive, diligent, child hardened, meticulous, and forever obliging, women are better at conforming, pretending, revising, conniving, meandering, coping, amending, kowtowing, reworking, playacting, following, and muddling through. Women are ideal slaves, that is. Lucky capitalism, indeed.
