WITH JOZO IN MIND (March 27, 2014)
Jozo Brandić took care of the shutters on the doors and windows of my house in Motovun in four phases (“From Hand to Mouth,” May 22, 2013). All told, there are twenty-four of them. Jozo took the shutters down one by one, sanded them, and covered each of them with two layers of protective finish. He started in November 2012, continued in early April and late May 2013, and completed the job in March 2014. Actually, he completed it only an hour ago. After each phase, I paid him for the work done. Having just paid him for the fourth and last phase, I feel twice fortunate once again. The shutters have been taken care of at long last, and Jozo has some money in his pocket one more time. Having lived from hand to mouth for untold years, he knows what he is doing. And I will do my best to engage him as soon as he will need some more money. Luckily, there is always something to do in the house. It was built with Jozo in mind, as it were.
