WHISTLE, BANG, RUMBLE (June 14, 2014)

Motovun Downtown has started in earnest. There are close to sixty bicyclists competing, most of whom are men in their late teens or early twenties. The first day is dedicated to training, and they are going down the trail as often as they wish. In the morning, the competitors must stop at several key spots along the trail. Later in the afternoon, they can go all the way without stopping. The second day will start with more training and end with the real competition. Early in the afternoon, everything is going smoothly. Members of the Youth Association of Motovun are overseeing the training. Along the trail, they whistle whenever a bicyclist passes by them so as to alert their colleagues down the trail. Sitting in my house, which is along the trail, I first hear one whistle at the start on the lower square, then I hear the bang of a jumping ramp up the trail, next I hear another whistle, which is followed by the rumble of a bicycle rushing past, and in the end I her the last whistle down the trail, where the competitors turn into a narrow archway. If there are a couple of bicyclists one after another, the cacophony becomes quite interesting. Whistle, whistle. Bang, bang. Whistle, whistle. Rumble, rumble. Whistle, whistle. Over and over again. Downtown turns mesmerizing after an hour or so.
