Oxfam is in the news with a new gauge of economic inequality ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where potentates and protesters from across the globe congregate for the annual event. According to the charity, eighty-five richest people are as wealthy as the poorest half of the world. Eighty-five versus three-billion and a half! An amazing statistic, no doubt. And equally as useless, politically speaking. Perhaps the only thing that may change is the notion of the so-called ninety-nine percent, which has been used by the Occupy movement recently. The political slogan needs revising, and fast. The eighty-five richest people represent only a bit more than a billionth of the human population. To wit, we are the hundred percent. The remainder is but a statistical error.
