VWEM (August 18, 2014)

As both American and European census data show nowadays, around one-in-five women ends her childbearing years without a child. This is a huge increase compared with the Seventies, when the ratio was about one-in-ten. Most important, the more highly educated a woman, the more likely she is to remain childless. About a quarter of women with master’s and doctoral degrees across the Atlantic remain childless. Many of them are childless by choice. Which brings me to the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (“VHEM,” January 21, 2013). Apparently, it hinges on the education of women. VHEM could thus be renamed into the Voluntary Women’s Education Movement or VWEM. If anything else, its name sounds so very positive. “Education” sounds much more appealing and even endearing than “extinction,” to be sure.
