VOTING FOR A LONG FALL (October 24, 2014)

Remembering the onset of last spring in Zagreb, I went for a long walk around the Croatian capital in search of parks and wooded areas once again. This year, the spring came in early March (“Voting for Spring,” March 8, 2014). When will the winter come? Before my walk, I assumed that most of the leaves would be gone by now, but I was in for a big surprise. Although some of the leaves have been shed by now, most of them are still holding onto their branches. More often than not, they are a funny shade of green. Grayish green, to be exact. The season has been unusually long and the leaves are kind of tired by now. Anyhow, most trees and bushes are still in leaf this late in the season. At the moment, they are voting for a long fall. The winter is some way off still. If last year can be used for guidance, the first snow is about a month in coming. By then, most of the leaves will be gone, I reckon. Another long walk in search of parks and wooded areas is already on my schedule. By then, the trees and bushes might well be voting for winter.
