VOJISLAV ŠEŠELJ FOR BEGINNERS (November 14, 2014)
Vojislav Šešelj, the Serbian ultra-nationalist on trial at the United Nations’ war crimes tribunal at The Hague, has been released for cancer treatment in Serbia. Apparently, his colon cancer has spread to his liver. As the story goes, the court decided to release him on humanitarian grounds, but it cannot be that simple. As soon as he arrived in Belgrade, he returned to his nationalist politics. He is all over the media in Serbia and the neighboring countries. Having a few months left, he is letting it rip, too. To wit, Šešelj’s release is either a part of a clever ploy to further destabilize the Balkans, or sheer idiocy at The Hague. In the former case, it most likely comes from America, which keeps the Balkans as a trump card against befuddled Europe. In the latter, it comes from ignoramuses who have learned nothing about the bloody peninsula after more than a decade of a myriad trials and tribulations. For Šešelj is opening wounds left and right, and especially in Bosnia, where they have never healed. This is where another internecine war could easily be started any day now. And there are few people who know this better than Šešelj himself. It is enough to follow his unabashed ultra-nationalist pronouncements to see precisely where he hopes to ignite the next round of hostilities. At this, he is surely a pro. As for the court in The Hague, incompetence is its one and only strength. Nations united in stupidity, to be sure.
