TWO SCENARIOS (June 26, 2014)
Under the present rules, which cannot but change over time, my beloved has two decades till retirement. Whenever the subject comes up, I talk about it as though I trust that the world as we know it will keep going forever. In the worst case, I hint that she may have to wait a quarter of a century for the final reward, but that is all I can come up with. Although I am quite convinced that the world will be a complete and total mess by then, I rarely mention it when we are talking about my beloved’s retirement. Or anything else, for that matter. Sometimes I mention two scenarios of the future, the first of which involves no change, while the second is pretty dire, and I proceed with an explicit acknowledgment of the first scenario for the sake of conversation. But it just crossed my mind that both of us would be quite lost in the case the second scenario came into play within a couple of decades. So many things we rely upon would be gone as if by magic, including my pensions. Unable to come up with any clear assessment of the dangers ahead, I quickly return to the first scenario in our conversations. To wit, my belief that the world is up shit creek is to no avail to me personally. I have no idea what to do with it, that is. For all my prescience, I am none the wiser.
