TOUGH TREES (May 30, 2014)

I woke up unusually early this morning. After my morning ablutions, I went to the garden. I could not wait to see how the fig trees I had planted a bit more than a month ago were doing (“Three Fig Trees,” April 26, 2014). And I was delighted to see that all three of them were doing well. As witnessed by several new leaves, every one of them has taken root. But the weeds in the garden are also doing very well. It has been quite wet the last two weeks, which I spent in Zagreb, and the garden is overgrown with weeds once again. I spent quite a while pulling them out. This is what I will be doing the next few days, as well. Anyhow, I am amazed at the joy the three fig trees give me. On my tour of the hilltown later on, I told everyone about my happiness. “The three fig trees in my garden have taken root,” I keep crooning with a big smile on my face. “They would,” everyone replies, “for they are tough trees.” Which only goes to show how confident I am of my gardening abilities.
