Pigeons and sparrows share the same turf in central Zagreb, but they rarely get into tiffs of any kind. Much smaller, sparrows often steal food right in front of pigeons, but they dash away in a jiffy. When many pigeons are close to each other, sparrows avoid coming into their midst. Even when they do, they rarely suffer any consequences of their mischief. Much bigger, pigeons nearly never peck at them. I just saw a sparrow run away from a few pigeons, but I quickly realized that it was not yet experienced at the game. On the young side, it was still afraid of pigeons. Come to think of it, there is much to learn from pigeons and sparrows. Even though they are not exactly friendly toward each other, they are far from unfriendly, either. They share the same food, but they manage to get along just fine, and to the benefit of both species. Would that humans could learn a thing or two from pigeons and sparrows, it crosses my mind out of the blue. But humans cannot get along with each other, let alone with other species. As ever, I am barking up the wrong tree. When will I learn that it is all in vain?
