THE VENETIAN FLAG (May 20, 2014)

I just spotted a fellow wearing a T-shirt with the Venetian flag on its chest. “Hey,” I caught myself thinking, “I would love to have such a T-shirt!” This surprised me, for I rarely, if ever, want anything I do not already have. “Nah,” I corrected myself a few second later. “But,” I continued, “if I had any flag on my chest, it would be the Venetian one.” It did not take me long to correct myself once again: “No flags on T-shirts for me!” And then I remembered how my No. 2 son waved the Venetian flag in his school in London many years ago (“Waving,” July 14, 1999). Indeed, if I would pledge allegiance to any flag, it would be the Venetian one. I would even fly it from my house in Motovun (“The Venetian Referendum,” March 19, 2014). Pure fiction, as is only appropriate when flags are concerned.
